Samuel Jones complains about the politics of the 39th Congress, the lack of constitutional rights for the South, the lack of a Post Office at Pinos Altos, and the lack of a Post route from Pinos Altos to the Mimbres River. Enclosed letter to E. B. French, 2d auditor of the Treasure, inquires about charges preferred against him and pay due to him as a settler at Fort Fillmore, New Mexico.

Canby was born in Piatt's Landing, Kentucky, to Israel T. and Elizabeth (Piatt) Canby. He attended Wabash College, but transferred to the United States Military Academy, from which he graduated in 1839.
